5-HTP is the precursor for serotonin (the "happy" neurotransmitter). Try 5-HTP if you have a certain kind of depression -- the "dark cloud," all the world just seems like it's gloomy type of depression. Also works well if you're anxious, in a hyperactive mental kind of way, or if you tend to crave comfort foods in the late afternoon/evening. 

You can get a similar effect by taking L-Tryptophan (one step behind this in the biochemical pathway), but 5-HTP has a stronger effect because it's a committed pathway. Your body can't make anything other than serotonin from this. Because of that, overdose is possible.

Recommended Dose: Start with 1 cap daily (late afternoon or evening), and wait at least four days before deciding to increase the dose. This is because you'll hit the saturation point at about Day 4, and you won't know whether or not the dose is too high for you until then. Note: If you overdose, you'll feel like a zombie. Which just means you went too far and you need to back off.

Caution: Be careful taking 5-HTP if you're on any SSRI medications (like Prozac). Too much serotonin can lead to Serotonin Syndrome, and that's not something you want to mess with.
